When a movie outshines the oustanding original

LaScenaMusicale: "As a piece of storytelling, Sweeney Todd the movie stuck even the inner circle of Sondheim purists as a remarkable reinvention.
After the screening, cup of tea in hand, Sondheim himself made a claim so extravagant I had to ask him to repeat it. ‘This,’ he declared, ‘is the first musical that has ever transferred successfully to the screen.’
Before you attempt a contradiction, remember that Sondheim speaks as one who knows."
