It's a game, it's musical--who can resist?

Chicago Tribune: "Starting this month at the Apollo Theater, forget all about the kind of theater that requires you to sit quietly in the dark for two hours. With 'Bingo: The Winning New Musical' -- the comedy with the self-explanatory title -- you, the theater-goer, get to play along with the cast. There's also a storyline about a trio of Bingo-obsessed gal pals, interwoven with the games. But more importantly, audience members who win during the Bingo portions get actual prizes. Top that, 'Wicked.'"

My first thought was, "Wow, this sounds fun!" Then I realized that it really just sounds impractical and difficult to pull off. I'm never quite sure about audience participation. I find that that it either has absolutely no structure or it's so controlled that it barely qualifies as participation. I guess I'd have to see how this is turns out before I can pass judgement on it.

This sounds like fun although things like this can go terribly wrong sometimes. I would agree with Varsenik in wanting to see it but it does sound like fun. It would have to be really specific context thought because I don't like the idea of like oh, insert responses here.

crazy....it just sounds crazy. fun and easy and simple minded...plus its bingo so what could be better? i sometimes wonder who comes up with this stuff but its definately revolutionary...it also seems like its taking the path that spelling bee forged and expanding on it....board games...theatre....board game theatre....i love it.

Is it wrong that the first thing I thought was "Its great that senior citizens now dont have to worry about missing bingo night when they make their occasional trip to the theater." I feel like some people might find this really fun, and some people are just turned off by audience participation. I dont want to pay a lot of money for a show to go and be made fun of on stage...

Hehe...I does sound like a lot of fun...not curing cancer or anything, but fun. I dont agree with V or Ryan, its not that hard at all to include the audience....depending on how important the length of the each game is to the story...but Im sure they accounted for that. The participation is only in calling out bingo so i think it would be pretty easy for the actors to improve. Plus how cool is it to win prizes!

This idea has its merits. It's a great way to break out of the normal mold of just watching a show. I'd really like to hear more about how this turns out because this could define a new wave of theatre.
