PLAYBILL ON OPENING NIGHT: The Coast of Utopia: Salvage — Juggernaut's End
Playbill News: "The Coast of Utopia (the whole magilah) officially washed up on these shores Feb. 18 — at a matinee, improbably enough, at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre — and there were firebrands at The FireBird (the ritzy Russkie eatery on Restaurant Row) stirring up lots of dust at dusk, celebrating the fact they had made it across the finish line en masse."

Little did I know when I first noticed the advertisement on LCT's site for The Coast of Utopia that it was going to be such a monumental production. I had read Stoppard's work, but never seen it performed. Much like Greek drama. Wait - how does that relate? Immensely. I noticed that Utopia was in three parts, and that they would be performing them separately and having marathons on selected days. I immediately compared that to our production of The Oresteia with the three plays and marathon performances. I was immediately drawn in and decided I had to see it. I saw the first two parts over Christmas Break and I will be seeing the final part - Salvage - during Spring Break. I extremely fortunate and very glad that I am able to see all three parts - originally before they extended it I wouldn't have been able to see the conclusion. Luckily this is no longer the case, so I will be able to see how the story wraps up. I enjoyed the first two parts immensely (of course enjoying the technical aspects as well). Brian MacDevitt's lighting design of the first part was very beautiful. I am eager to see Natasha Katz's lighting on the third part. I also found it very exciting that CMU grad Kathleen Dobbins is the ALD on all three productions. After helping Chris Akerlind on Piazza at Lincoln Center she is now working in the space again, but with three new designers. That is extremely exciting and I hope to be as luck as she in getting to work on Broadway so quickly - and Lincoln Center, the Vivian Beaumount, which is my favorite theatre. But definitely looking forward to seeing Salvage!
