Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Tales of doomed lovers amid castles and forests and seductive mists — it’s the perfect setting for a classical ballet, particularly around Valentine’s Day. There are a few choices to be had, but this time Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has selected what is considered the world’s most popular full-length, “Swan Lake.”

Swan Lake is such a legendary and well known ballet that I am always interested to hear about the different touches that each theatre that performs the show gives to it, considering that such a loved story can run the risk of feeling tired and heavy. Swan Lake itself is such a romantic story, and so it is perfect that it was performed during Valentine’s Day. I think that the collaboration between designers to achieve the goal of heightened romance and emotion is the first thing to be commended in this adaptation. I think that from the photos, the result was a truly beautiful production. Another thing about this article that I found resonated with me was the reminder of the absolute synchronicity of a dance company. In something as demanding as dance, it is key that the entire community is able to flawlessly pick up and put down each role in a way that maintains the integrity and overall look of the show, but celebrates each performer’s individual talent in each role.
I was a little take aback by this review due to it tittle and what it actually focused on. I think I was excepting a little detail and story relating to how the new scenic design had moved this production in a new and different direction. But it was only mention once for a short second, as it described its feathery quality. It goes on to suggest if I am current to lake favor for the lighting designer, and have conflicting conceptions of the costume designer. I think I was just expecting a more technical review and got a very formal ballet one. Apparently the Pittsburgh favorites did a very respectable job and there were some lovely new comers to be debuted. I personally think I prefer modern ballet. I think its a little easer to follow as a storyline, but I do have to give my respects to the traditions.
