Female TV Writers in the U.K. Demand a Better Shot at the Top Series

Variety: A group of 76 female TV writers has sent an open letter to drama commissioners in Britain, asking that women be given greater opportunities to write, and write for, the biggest shows.

I back these women. They have my support. I am in outrage for them. When less than 10% of writers in the British television industry are women, that. Is. a. Problem. It’s really not hard to hire females. It’s probably harder to avoid hiring females than it is to just hire a female. When I learned from this article that Doctor Who went five whole seasons without having a single episode written by a female, I got really mad. I really do like how at the end of the letter, they say that women are becoming leads in shows, but why is a man writing a show about a woman, when woman can write it better? The same is true for lighting design, less than 15% of lighting designers are female, so all the female lighting designers of the world should come together and write a letter to address this issue.
