I think it is so interesting to see how widespread the acknowledgement of equality- particularly in the film industry has become. The article mentions the use of a quota to meet the “50/50 male to female ratio in film festivals like Berlinale and Cannes, but part of me wonders if that is truly the best idea. I think by forcing equality in that manner, by making it a quota, or a requirement, takes away from the credibility of the work being shown. I think it makes sense from a standpoint of the need for equality, but it also detracts from the true power and acknowledgement of the work of female directors being shown. Change most certainly does need to be done and the predominant film festivals in Europe (and in the States) need to acknowledge the incredible talent of female directors (or better yet- directors that are also females). I hope that conversations like this will continue to occur and change will happen.
