Artists Discuss Actions After Week of Protests in Ferguson

St. Louis Public Radio: Racial divides -- in St. Louis, the arts community and the nation -- were the focus Wednesday night as artists gathered at the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission to talk about Michael Brown's death. RAC held the gathering for artists to process the week’s events in Ferguson and discuss how artists can address their role in the public dialogue about it. “It’s equivalent to a heart attack in America,” said one woman who entered the conversation later in the evening. “The civil rights movement of the 21st century is happening now. Here.”

I am disappointed with this article. I was expecting a more provocative discussion about how art can help heal in these situations and even incite social change. Discussion about how an event like this manifests itself in the aesthetics of a culture. Rather, I just got a watered down version of any other article that was put out at the time. I am curious to know if more was involved in the discussion at the event and it just went unreported or if what is included in the article really was the highlights. I wonder if the discussion may have been left useful and less provocative because St. Louis is so close to Ferguson that the initial shock was in a way blinding and it was hard, even for the artists, to be objective.
