Variety: The homicide investigation into the death of Sarah Jones on the set of “Midnight Rider” is focusing on who decided to put the crew on the railroad bridge where the accident occurred and how the crew got access to the property, a source familiar with the investigation told Variety on Thursday.
The answer to the second question appears to be easier to answer. A spokesman for Rayonier, the paper company that owns the land surrounding the rail line at the site of the accident, confirmed to Variety that Rayonier had given permission for the film shoot to be on its property, but it cannot give permission for the crew to be on the tracks, which are owned by CSX. A gate in a fence on the property bears a sign saying access is controlled by Rayonier guards.

As horrible as this tragedy is, I'm glad that it is being taken this seriously. It would have been all too easy for this to be written off as one company's stupidity- just a tragic accident. Instead, it seems like the entire industry is paying attention to this and that it is going to have an effects on rules of safety and protection given to all members of a film crew. I'm glad people realize the implications of this accident and that people are paying attention.
The more I hear about this, the more ridiculous I find the whole situation. There wasn't ONE person in the whole production who spoke up and said, "this doesn't feel like a good plan, we should think about this more." This wasn't even just shooting on the tracks (also ridiculously stupid), they put an obstruction on the tracks and figured they'd be able to clear the tracks in time? I have a feeling this is going to get uglier and uglier as more information comes out.
