LIFE AFTER PI

YouTube: LIFE AFTER PI is a short documentary about Rhythm & Hues Studios, the L.A. based Visual Effects company that won an Academy Award for its groundbreaking work on "Life of Pi" -- just two weeks after declaring bankruptcy. The film explores rapidly changing forces impacting the global VFX community and the Film Industry as a whole.

Life After Pi is a compelling documentary. While specifically concentrating on the downfall of VFX house Rhythm and Hues after twenty-five years, the short movie also does an excellent job of illuminating what is wrong with the industry as a whole. Tax subsidies in other countries are certainly a major culprit. However, the ‘fixed bid’ model for bidding a contract, where directors rarely see the chain-of-command process of approvals (highlighted in the documentary from about 12:00 to 17:00) is particularly insidious. As I have several incredibly talented friends in the VFX industry who have had to chase jobs in different countries, this issue is very close to my heart. I am pleased to see awareness is spreading. Kudos to David for posting this, and the Variety and FX Guide coverage of the Oscar protest.
