Humor in Depravity

ReviewJournal.com: "It's tough enough getting local audiences to come to one theatrical event. But 10? And all within a three-week period? And all in some way 'experimental'? You have to label Ernest Hemmings, the organizer of the fifth annual Samuel Beckett Festival, as either smart visionary or deluxe nuts."

Beckett is indeed a very difficult form of theatre to produce. and Hemmings couldn't be more right when he says that if one doesn't like or understand Beckett, "he/she hasn't seen good Beckett."
Although Beckett is considered a "minimalist" his works are quite complex. I think this is one of the reasons it seems not to be so popular among modern theatre goers. I'd say that because of the fast-growing enertainment industry's success and dominance of modern theatre, many audiences have been, in a sense, desensitized to the powerful and complex messages of Beckett's works.

It is good to see that they are not afraid to challenge the audience to think and really have to get involved with the play. I think that the work is certainly optimistic and it is optimistic to not see an article about the strikes.
