Writers Strike Picket Lines: How Studios Retort Went Over

The Hollywood Reporter: Intermittent rain and quite a bit of wind did not appear to deter striking writers from again hitting picket lines throughout Los Angeles on Thursday, many of them galvanized by the previous night’s solidarity rally that drew over 1,800 Writers Guild of America members.

I believe this is the first strike in my lifetime where I’ve actually understood what is happening, and why it matters in real time. Although they teach us about strikes in school, what they are, and why they matter in theory, citing past examples, it’s another thing to finally see it in person and understand it, and the stakes involved. I actually heard about the strike when catching up on the news with the late show with Seth Meyers. He included a short segment talking about how the show may be interrupted because of a potential strike following soon after. It wasn’t long after that the news broke that the strike was official. So now, playing a mixed bag emotions, knowing that this is the industry I’m going into. On one hand, we see the backbone of our industry being taken for granted, and not compensated for their work. We see people unwilling to give them what they are worth. On the other hand, we see a union who’s willing to fight for their members. And additional organizations and unions showing solidarity and support with WGA.
