I am so lucky to have seen the lion King on tour a few years ago. It is well known for its paw paw tree and unique styling of costumes. And this now 25-year-old show is iconic for so many reasons. However, I am so pleased that this article highlighted so many of the Creatives in this show, as opposed to simply name of the cast members. It was so interesting to learn about Julie Taymor, who was the Director costume designer and mask co-designer for the show? And the first woman to win a Tony award for best direction? That is simply iconic. Few people have had such an impact on not only one show, but in the theater industry. I am no puppeteering expert, but I know that, as a theatergoer, lion, king was my first exposure to professional puppetry on the stage. It gave puppetry a new life in my eyes, and allowed me to see the elegance and sophistication in that type of storytelling. This show has been on Broadway for 25 years for a reason.
