Backstage: New York City’s LGBT community is getting a little backwards come Monday.
The 11th annual Broadway Backwards event will take place March 21 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (the current home of “Kinky Boots”). Produced by fundraising org Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the evening of revelry will feature some of Broadway’s finest, and benefit both BC/EFA and The Center, which provides members of the LGBT community health and wellness resources.

I love broadway backwards. I think its a really great way to have a little fun and make some money for a good cause at the same time. At my high school we had broadway backwards every year, and it was a blast. As a performer it is so fun to be able to do a song that you wouldn't normally get to do, and to explore a different side of yourself that you wouldn't necessarily ever have to tap into. I am always so proud of the theater community when we take something as serious and important as LGBT+ rights and make it interesting and compelling for people. I think often people shy away from topics that make them think too much, and almost never contribute money to something that could be considered controversial, even though I disagree with it being considered that in the first place.I think more important than anything else broadway backwards shows that regardless of gender a good performance is a good performance, good music is good music, and a person is just a person. I look forward to watching the videos from this year, and would love to be able to work on something that has the same social impact at some point in my career.
