Watching Out for Signs of Trouble

Occupational Health & Safety: It's well known that weathering a disaster or a financial setback can cause individuals to increase their consumption of alcohol, prescription medications, or illegal drugs. People with past or current substance use issues are considered more likely to have difficulties during or after such events. If your company does not have a random drug testing program and an employee assistance program in place, there are resources available from various agencies to help you understand the warning signs and provide assistance to a worker who may be experiencing this.

Yes! This, a hundred times this! Addicts are are not evil people who should be cast away and penalized severely for behaviors that they do not have the ability or strength to control. They are sick people who need help, attention, and care. I think that this is an important thing for employers to be aware of because addiction will almost certainly affect a worker's ability to perform in the workplace, and an employer who is aware of and looking for these signs will be able to provide support and resources to the worker rather than fire them. As the article states, it is indeed time for addictions to be recognized and treated as illnesses rather than crimes.
