The Curse of the Experienced Eye

Butts In the Seats: Ken Davenport recently talked about how he enjoyed Broadway shows much more when he was younger. Part of the reason he has a harder time now is because he analyzes the show with the eye of a producer. The other reason is because when he was younger, he was often ignorant about disparaging news about a show in the absence of social media and websites and thus approached each show without any bias.

It's definitely an interesting sort of dilemma, the idea that the more you know about how something works, the more possibility there is for you to become jaded. I can easily see that happening, but I think personally I relate more to what the author said about science -- that more knowledge lets you see things in completely different ways. I certainly can't claim the same amount of experience, but for me knowing something about the hidden workings of theatre makes it more interesting, and I like thinking about how certain effects were done, though I suppose there's a chance that I'll feel differently over time.
