“Midnight Rider” fatal train accident triggers push to improve safety

Variety: The accident on the set of “Midnight Rider” last week that killed 27-year-old camera assistant Sarah Jones has triggered calls for the industry to establish new guidelines for on-set safety.
Even as the investigations into the cause of the accident continue, crew members in Atlanta, Savannah and Los Angeles are launching new campaigns to improve safety procedures.
“I am still not 100% on that facts that have unfolded, but I can tell you this: Nobody should have been on those tracks,” Chris “CC” Clark told a gathering of members of IATSE Local 479 in Atlanta on Monday, in a speech that was posted on YouTube. “The hectic ‘hurry up and go’ on a film set is a hazardous way of thinking. We are not doctors saving lives. I understand we have a job to do, and we all want to secure the next job. But when safety is thrown out the window, accidents will happen in our line of work.”

Although the death of Sarah Jones is a great tragedy, I am glad there are initiatives to improve safety in Hollywood and in the entertainment industry at large. As more details come out about what exactly went wrong on the set of "Midnight Rider," it is clear that the wrong people were responsible for handling the safety on set the day Sarah Jones lost her life. This article makes a great point in that the people tasked with handling safety for the production were the same people who had a billion other things to worry about. Unfortunately, because some of the people on the production team were stretched so thin with all of their responsibilities, safety did not get the attention it needed. Perhaps in some cases this passes okay in Hollywood, as not every scene is taped in the middle of a railroad track. However, the "Midnight Rider" incident definitely proves that safety should be a high priority for a production team, and it should be put in the hands of people who can give it the attention it demands.

It is sad to hear of such a tragic death to happen to such a young a girl. It is also not great to hear that this could happen. While working on a set that could easily hurt people you would think there would have been better safety put in place before hand. The fact that now more and more people are trying to pay attention to safety is sad. It took a girl dying in a tragic accident to push these people to try a little harder when it came to safety. When working on a film regardless of the location safety should be the number concern. Hopefully, something like this will not happen again and this will serve as a warning to others.
