Contrary to Andrew Liszewski’s opening statement, I found it very easy to become excited about Quadrature’s twelve-track sequencer of music boxes. I admit that a large part of the appeal for me is the beautifully crafted physical object itself. However, when I played the video, I found the haunting quality of the visceral metal plucking to be equally appealing. I especially enjoyed how the music boxes became increasingly chaotic, and then were brought back to a single one. According to Quadrature’s website, Twelve was commissioned by composer Clara Iannotta. I will be interested to hear how she incorporates this instrument into her compositions.
