Empire State Building Halloween Light Show 2013

Viral Viral Videos: Step aside homeowners, because there was a new light show display this spooky holiday to trump all others.

For the first time, the world famous Empire State Building in Manhattan teamed up with NYC radio stations Z100 and 103.5 KTU to present an epic Halloween light show.

Residents could tune into the radio to listen to the synchronized music choreographed by lighting designer Marc Brickman.

That was really cool, for a few seconds. The music didn't really match up with the lights. It did for the obvious parts, like the chorus for the Ghostbusters theme, but the rest of the time it seemed to just be doing random light patterns. There was not much attempt at anything besides bright and flashy. I was also hoping to see a lot more of the building then they lit up. I am sure there were some great legal reasons not to, but it would have been a lot more exciting. This was a really cool idea that could have been executed a little better.

If you watch it with the sound off, it's pretty cool. Otherwise, I agree with Isaac in that the music doesn't really match up. This display reminds me of Walt Disney World's new light/ media show on Cinderella's castle, but obviously on a smaller scale. I am really interested in large-scale projection and light shows such as these. I've seen the Prudential building in Boston light up occasionally, and when the Sox won the World Series, they lit up windows to write, "Go Sox." But I digress. I wish that this was a little more complex. I was kind of underwhelmed. It was still cool though. Maybe they could have done something with the windows?

Being from New York I can say that the Empire State Building has always done cool effects with their lights but none quite like this, this is really cool. Unfortunately I do have to agree with Keith and Isaac in that the music did not quite correlate with the lighting effects that were attempting to emulate it. This being said I think that if they try again, perhaps for the christmas season, and put a little more effort into matching the lighting effects with the music that they can have much more success.
