Overall, this article has some good points. However, I don't know how much I agree with the idea of sending a "TIME" magazine cover with your name on it to the employer. While the employer is looking for someone who stands out, I think there is definitely a point where someone can go too far, and the employer can get a bad impression from the interviewer. For example, sending multiple follow-ups (more than just an email and a handwritten letter, or an email asking when you will hear back, etc.), in my opinion, is too much. I think it would certainly be too much to send the employer an autographed football. With that said, I think this article succeeds at encouraging people to put a lot of effort into their interview process. This includes heavily researching the company, preparing questions FOR the interviewer, and not just expecting to answer the questions asked of you, sending handwritten notes, etc.
I disagree with Jess, I don't think that a Time cover magazine or a football are going too far. Most employers are looking to hire someone innovative, who thinks "outside the box" and can help their company keep up with world trends and developments. A candidate that is not only very motivated but also original with instantly stand out; the same way the interviewer probably wants the company to stand out.
