BlackTrax Tracking System Gains Certifications, Ready to Ship Worldwide
Stage Directions: The latest version of the Cast Software’s BTBeacon, part of their BlackTrax 6D tracking system, has just earned a “Certificate of Conformity” from the FCC, and exceeded standards required to display the CE Mark. Now that it has past these benchmarks, Cast Software has placed the BlackTrax Solution Version 1 into full production, and the first systems are expected to ship worldwide soon. Since the prototype demonstration of the BlackTrax system at demo’s last fall, Cast software has made the BTBeacon 50% thinner so that it is smaller than an iPhone, and increased its range (up to 50 meter diameter) and lengthened its battery life by 25% (it now lasts up to 8 hours). BlackTrax is a powerful, accurate tracking technology solution that delivers precise 3D & 6D positioning to controllers for the downstream interfacing automated/robotic technologies used extensively in entertainment production. Using proprietary IR and RF, it delivers dynamic streaming positional data with six degrees of freedom (x, y, z, plus roll, pitch & yaw) to 3D & spatial audio, automated lighting, multi-media servers and robotic cameras – all at the same time and in realtime.

The BlackTrax system sounds very cool, and useful for stage events. I understand the basic elements of the system and how they work, but I would love to learn what the limitations are. I understand how getting the FCC to allow a product to be made is very important, but the technology itself is a much more interesting topic. I can see the BlackTrax being used to track moving lights, start sound and light cues, effect media and even tell the stage manager what's going on in a blackout. I hope that CMU gets one of these systems in the next few years so that I can learn about it first hand.
Ok so this sounds great, and I would be interested to really hear more about it. I am also greatly intrigued to see what 6D truly is and how deeply intricate this it. I agree with Akiva about the tracking of moving lights and such. This sounds awesome and has ton of potential, I just want to know what it all means and can do.
