I Interview Playwrights Part 84: Rob Handel

Adam Szymkowicz: "You're the head of the Dramatic Writing MFA program at Carnegie Mellon. I want to start out by asking you to plug your program. What can you tell me about it? How is it different from other programs? How long have you been teaching there? How do you approach teaching playwriting?"

A couple of comments. Firstly, Rob brings up a really good point about working with the other departments of the school. I know that's a key facet of the MFA programs and really starts coming in in the junior and senior years, but I really wish DPs had a chance to interact with the other freshmen and sophomores beyond Conservatory Hour (I know, real interaction there) and Playground. I'd like to say that I've made an effort to meet all of the actors, directors, dramaturgs, etc. out of class, but there's nothing compared to working on projects with others to form bonds and working relationships. Also, he brings up a great point when he encourages his playwrights to never stop submitting and never let an opportunity pass you by. Especially coming off of the Summer Work Conservatory Hour, it has thoroughly convinced me that taking a summer off is time wasted that could be spent in much better ways.

(Oh, and Rob, I have the same problem. It's Ran-gell, with a hard G. I get "Rangull" or "Ranjell" more than I'd care to think about.)
