I really am a huge fan of this show. I think that it is a great move on part of the producing organization to have the show in the Apollo Theater. Because of the history of the theater, it will add to enhance to the history of the story. It is also really powerful that the producing team wants to take this story to South Africa. It will really highlight the fact that talent is not based off race, but quality of work. I'm glad that this revival is happening, not just because I personally enjoy the story, but how the producing organization is developing the story from its original presentation.
I have never seen this production performed live onstage, but I have seen the movie and I can say that I was not terribly impressed by it. Of course this musical has its own dedicated fan base, which every musical does, but watching this movie was none to inspiring for me. Too long. Too dark. Not enough movement. This international tour sounds like it has a lot of support, and a great time behind it. Can't say I'll make any effort to see it in Pittsburgh though...
