August Wilson's mythic character Aunt Ester explored in theater festival

Post Gazette: "Aunt Ester is back where she began. A mythic inhabitant of 1839 Wylie Ave. in the Hill, she moves Downtown this week as the new August Wilson Center for African American Culture embarks on its most ambitious creative project, The Aunt Ester Cycle."

This speaks to the power that characters have that never appear on stage in a performance. In Wilson's plays, which are more or less realistic in nature, willingly accept Aunt Ester and her age as not only possible but real. Although she doesn't appear in every one of the 10 plays, her spirit is always present in the characters and her voice is echoed in what they say. Much has been said recently about her death and the downward slide of humanity and then rebirth and rejuvenation in conjunction with recent US political changes, so the timing is perfect to take on this cycle.
