‘Queen’ runs aground

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: "Far too much of 'Les Miserables' and not nearly enough of 'Riverdance.' That may be the simplest, if not the fullest, way to explain the problems facing 'The Pirate Queen,' the handsomely designed but drearily predictable quasi-operatic musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg ('Les Mis,' 'Miss Saigon') that received its pre-Broadway world premiere Sunday at the Cadillac Palace Theatre."

It is unfortunate to hear such a negative review on a show that has been so hyped for so long. I sometimes wonder if too much publiciy harms the production. I was expecting a lot because I had heard so much, but now I wonder if it is really worth the price of the ticket. Bummer.

In my opinion, based on short clips that i have seen on the productions online video archive tracking the production of the show, they are trying really hard, with nothing to back it up. I agree that too much publicity harms a show, because the bar was set monumentally high, but it seems like they just can cut it in their own standard.
