Behind the Scenes of Disney Cruise Line’s ‘Tangled: The Musical’
Disney Parks Blog: Many of you joined us last week at Disney Cruise Line’s first-ever meet-up as our Creative Entertainment team gave a sneak peek at some of the new fun coming soon to our ships. What a great show! I was honored to be a part of it and have the chance to talk with our talented show directors about our new entertainment experiences inspired by “Frozen,” Star Wars and “Tangled.”

I think Tangled: The Musical will be a very good show. It already has a lot of great music in it that is good for musicals. With the addition of more songs, I bet it has become a better-rounded musical. Tangled was a very popular movie and has a very large fan base. Though people will not choose a cruise just because of the show on it, many people will be happy with the entertainment. If guests have a positive experience with the entertainment, especially on a Disney Cruise, they are more likely to plan another vacation on another one of their ships. I went on a Disney Cruise a long time ago and there was not an actual musical. They had many shows that I enjoyed very much, but I think it is better to have a full musical. I would definitely have been more entertained and interested if I saw an exclusive Disney musical only on that specific cruise ship. I hope Tangled: The Musical is given as much attention as Disney Broadway musical.
Disney is just so freaking smart in the all of the ways that they develop new work. They recognize that they have all of these outlets to try out new things with a minimal risk of loosing a profit (but money is not really a problem for Disney). If you can not tell slowly Disney is taking more and more of our favorite classic Disney movies and turning them into show stopping broadway musicals. When they are just starting off with a new show they will put a production up for a limited engagement on one of their cruise ships or in one of their parks. This is done to get audience feedback on the production. If the production has a good response then it moves forward to one step close to be a Broadway musical! However, Not all of them make it to Broadway. All in all, I think that Disney is super smart for doing
Tangled is literally my favorite new disney movie in a long time!!! It was so funny, and happy, with a mixture of sad and tragedy. It just had some beautiful ups and downs that made it, to me, better than Frozen. I could watch Tangled every day for days, and that’s what I basically did when it first came out on DVD. I’m so excited that they are making it into a musical! I love movie to musical adaptations because they always find ways to bring in new songs that are even better than the original ones (probably because I’ve heard the original ones so many times over and the writers have had a lot longer to look at the movie and decide what they want to add). this makes me wish I could be on a Disney cruise right now. It makes me wonder when they are going to make a Broadway version.
I think Tangled would make a pretty good musical. It already has a fun story that many people know and yet can still be surprising, and lots of music that would be fun to see onstage. That, and I think there are a lot of possibilities with magic and Mother Gothel’s tricks onstage that would make the show surprising and interesting to watch even if one has seen the movie a thousand times. Fun fun fun for all. Not only is Tangled one of my favorite new Disney films, I really liked *all* of the music from it and think it would work onstage. On a different note, I think that Disney cruises have a really good thing going when they say that their main focus is on the entertainment and that they want their audience to see a show. Though Disney themed things are always fun, my favorite parts are the stories that they tell and sometimes I feel that those plots and characters get lost in the “themed” experience.
Several years ago, when I was a kid, my family and I took a trip on the Disney Cruise Lines, and we all had a pretty good time. I didn’t really watch any of the shows just because they seemed more towards kids who were even younger than I was. I know that cruise ships provide a completely different atmosphere than what most theatres do. That’s probably one of the first times I’ve seen a cruise show get put together. It wasn’t much of a behind the scenes, but it’s different in the fact that it happens on a ship night after night. You always have a new audience to entertain, and you’ve got to be able to get the set on a ship that already has a limited amount of space when you use the same space for multiple shows. Disney continues to produce and come up with shows for just about everything.
I love Tangled! It is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. It's fun and funny and sweet and scary and has great, great music. There are also some very amusing characters (in my case because I can relate some of them to people I know- wink, wink, Mom) that make it enjoyable for kids and their parents alike. I think this movie will make a brilliant musical- especially with Alan Menken behind it. I think that the addition of new songs will also help the show to be successful since there's now an element of "Oooh, I wonder what they added" that wouldn't be there with a straight adaptation. I really wish this video had included a little more of the actual *running* of the show, since that's what I had thought it would be. I have always been very interested in learning more about the behind the scenes work on Disney shows that are not the design process. Oh well, maybe sometime soon.
While never being on a cruise I can only imagine the relaxation and the magic that occurs on Disney cruise ships. With that in mind I have heard the horror stories from the employees who work on the ships so I have always found that side of the industry to be a little disheartening. I feel that we are at a time in our culture where the place of the preforming and arts is losing its ground and people don’t see the value anymore that breaks my heart. Knowing that there still exists a place for it on cruises is conflicting for me knowing the makers’ side. With more innovation and early education and technology progressing maybe someday we will get back to a time where theater is valued in our culture to the same degree it is in Russia.
The beloved Disney movie “Tangled” is so special to so many audiences. I have been on multiple Disney Cruises, yet have never had the pleasure of seeing this stage show. My family has, however, and all I have heard are rave reviews. Although I haven't seen the production, it was incredibly interesting watching a video about how it was made. Seeing such special stories be brought to life on stage is so thought provoking.Having rehearsal videos in the video was very cool because as a stage manager I love to see what different rehearsal rooms can look like, and Disney's definitely run like a tight ship. One day, I would love to work on a Disney cruise line to see how they do it. I can't imagine what the backstage of that theater looks like, especially One that is floating on the ocean, and that has multiple shows going on at once.
