Ah, the internet of things, that great buzz marketing term which simply means domestic appliances communicating with each other. While I may rip on the marketing, I am very interested in interconnecticity of devices in the household setting. There is so much excitin stuff happening in that sector, and nearly every big technology company has released some sort of home integration product in the past few years. But while the little gadgets are great, I think one of the truly innovative and I predict successful marryings of homes and modern technology will be the result of Tesla's upcoming merger with Elon Musk's solar energy company SolarCity. With Tesla's home-sized 14kWh Powerwall batteries combined with Solar energy, it is absolutely possible for homes to become completely grid-independent in the extremely near-future. Then with the more domestic power management tools like Nest, WeMo and Hue lightbulbs, a truly futuristic home is possible with total automation.
