Hollywood wants drones for filmmaking

The Hill's Hillicon Valley: Unmanned drones are best known for their ability to hunt down suspected terrorists abroad, but they might have an entirely different use: movie-making. Hollywood's lobbying group is pressing the Obama administration to allow filmmakers to use drones for aerial shots.

I think that's an excellent idea. Of course, I would love to combine automation and theatre: it's what I want to do for a career. I think that unmanned drones could get some really cool shots that people can't get because of safety or fear of falling from an airplane. I do understand the risks to this: allowing planes to fly over populated areas with no supervision...doesn't sound too safe. Still, I think it'd be really cool!

So the statement that there will be 30,000 drones flying the skies by the end of the decade freaks me out. I am not a supper paranoid person about "The Man" watching us but 30,000 freaks me out a little.

Ok so I do agree that the movie shots from the drone would be cool and this could probably very useful for Hollywood. So on all of those points I do agree, but no matter what it still really freaks me out.

I agree that this could potentially be very exciting and cool for the movie industry, however, I have some huge reservations about this becoming a reality. On top of the privacy concerns that were mentioned in the article, which are by no means inconsequential, there is also the potential issue of the publicly sold drones being altered and used for things other than their stated purpose. To take this to the extreme, there are some pretty smart, technologically talented people in this world who could potentially hack and rewire and alter a "harmless" drone to become something that isn't so harmless.

While the equipment would make filming safer, I can understand the hesitance of the government to allow for more public use of the drones.
It mentions that the FAA is drafting terms for more public use of the drones, but I can also imagine that the allocation of drone technology will be highly monitored. They also point out a concern that the equipment could be used for unlawful surveillance.
What projects merit the use of the equipment? I am in favor of utilizing drones for film shooting on motion pictures. The projects are large enough that the technology use would be easier to monitor. I would be more concerned about allowing individuals to use they equipment. However, selling and working with production companies seems to be a more reasonable feat.

I think this is a bit excessive. The current camera shots available to the movie industry have proven to be perfectly adequate so far. Drones could certainly allow for spectacular and unique shots but is it really worth having the sky filled with unmanned aircraft? That not only seems dangerous but also a nuisance and unnerving. I already lived near an international airports flight path and that alone was obnoxious enough but increasing the amount of planes would be even worse.

What a great idea! Often times drones get a really bad name because people think that they will lead to a big brother world like in 1984. So seeing drones getting used to make art(or at least entertainment) is really refreshing. Hopefully this technology becomes adapted for film successfully. Most of the technology that we use in theatre has been adapted from other fields. For example a lot of rigging tools and equipment has been taken from rock climbing. It's a nice reminder that we are not the only industry to do this.

I agree with DoubleA_SingleK, this would be a great innitiative for the MPAA, providing ways to get complicated and magnificent aerial shots safely and consitently. Still a bit creepy, but very cool.

The only thing that would ever make this better is if they made a movie in which the drone is the main protagonist and it has a mind of its own, but it's like a friendly drone. Sort of like a Terminator meets Herbie. He could have a theme song and everything. They could even make a christmas special in which Droney (still working on it) flies up to the North Pole to lead Santa's Sleigh after Rudolph goes missing off the coast of Malaysia.

I really like this idea.
