Musical "Shrek" has some flaws but its heart is in the right place

Seattle Times Newspaper: "It's not so easy crafting a Broadway musical about one, either. But whatever the shortcomings of 'Shrek the Musical,' and there are some, this world-premiere show at 5th Avenue Theatre has going for it something that too few splashy, screen-to-stage tuners possess: real heart."

Ha ha... you need more than heart to have a good show... and to match the already high expectations from a movie.

While the comparison between Shrek and both Spamalot and Into the Woods intrigues me (I love both of those shows), I don't think that Shrek will be able to deliver. Too many people have their expectations too high, and, as the article pointed out, there is no way that this show can compete with its closest competitors on B'way (in terms of content). I feel that the costumes have the potential to look silly, like the dragon that is mentioned in the article, and that the story is not very compelling.

That said, I don't know how much the creators changed the plot, characters, and situations.

PS. The lack of a love song in a show like that...what were they thinking.

I think that there has been way to much "controversy" about Shrek. Some people seem to love the show some don't. This article about the show gives a whole new view on the show. Many have high expectations for this show but especially when it comes to movies becoming Broadway shows the expectations grow. Hopefully Shrek will grow and success and have a long run when it reaches Broadway.

living up to the "Damn Yankees" theme. i am glad to see that this production is got substance at least. Shrek is a pretty decent story, but like they mentioned, screen-to-stage production have a pretty good chance of flopping in an attempt for spectacle. i would actually be interested in seeing this production.

What is the obsession wih bringing succssful movies to the stage? Oh right. Money.

Shrek, having been an enormous social and monetary success is headed to Broadway following the like of Legally Blonde and a few others which wish to suck money from eager fans and water down the art of theatre.

But if Mike Meyers was going to do Shrek, I'd definitely see it.
