Let someone else play with your play.

PRODUCER’S PERSPECTIVE: "When I saw the Mexican production of My First Time earlier this month, I remembered something: there are ideas other than my own . . . and some of them are good!"

This is a really interesting take on new works. As someone who has worked on and witnessed the development of a new musical, I know how closely the creators guard their secrets. Even if it is not a new work, it can be hard for directors, actors and designers to give up their control. However, since art has so many perspectives, it is important to examine as many of these as possible.

Seeing how others solve some production problems may also be helpful. It may not influence you to do exactly what the other company did, but it will probably give you new ideas and send you off in a new direction.

I think this is a very good process. But I know how difficult it would be to see someone else take you idea and mess with it. Most of the time, I could see people not fully opening their mind to the new idea. As in, they would sit through the performance and note all the differences and how they were not right. If they could get past this mentality, I think the process could bring new life into shows.

I think that this is an excellent idea. Like the article said, it is very easy to get in a state where you think that your ideas are the only ones which exist. I think a lot of art can benefit a lot from outside input, and it's always refreshing to see what somebody else thinks about what you're doing. I think that doing this could help playwrights, directors, and designers to expand their creative horizons.
