CMU's Australia campus called 'expensive failure'

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "'While it's too soon to declare victory, we and the South Australia government are satisfied with our progress to date,' said CMU spokesman Ken Walters in a statement issued Friday."

I wasn't aware that CMU had a campus in Australia. Of all of the places for a campus on this earth why did CMU think Australia was the best? That it would be a good connection CMU internationally or as convenient point for students that are on that side of the globe to attend that campus. I'm still not sure. I hope someone can spread some light on it.

I think its cool we have other campuses, though I wish we'd communicate more. I bet that the Qatar campus didnt start off very fast, and Australia will build up more too. Maybe if we have more pittsburgh/australia programs it would gain respect and popularity.

First off, I didn't realize that Australia was big enough to to have a "South Australia" government. Secondly, what does Australia have to offer that other countries like Singapore do not? I know the CMU ETC has opened a branch campus in Singapore on the grounds that they'll have access to more programmers. Does Australia offer anything like that?

Australia would be a nice place to go for a semester, if only the drama program was present there. Its got to be hard to get a new school going that can attract high level students and high level teachers from day one. Its hard to know which comes first. The teachers don't want to go there if it might not work, and students want the renowned teachers to be teaching them.

This is simply another move by CMU to try to raise their international status. CMU is just trying to compete with all the Ivies, but they've been around for a good bit longer. It takes time to establish anything, much less a university in a different country. Patience people patience. I'm sure it's not the worst government funded project in history.

I wonder if the Heinz School can provide the same quality of education in a satellite school. What astounds me is how much money the South Australian Government pledged in the hopes of a quick turnaround. 5 years is an extremely short amount of time to make back an investment, especially in a school which doesn't exactly run on the same principles of a business.

Oh dear. I mean, I would love to go study abroad in Australia, don't get me wrong, but it seems like we're not really drawing the students like they want to. It also seems like maybe they keep pushing and hoping for an optimistic outcome, but they're ignoring the facts. This could, of course, just be the media spin.

I really wish I had known CMU had an Australian campus. Are they waiting for it to really take off before spreading the word about it? I'm not worried about the campus failing, these things take awhile to find their way. I hope they start a drama program at the new campus.
