Cirque takes hat out of the ring for 2010 ceremonies

globeandmail.com: "At one point, the Quebec company was in discussions with VANOC not simply to appear, but to be executive director of both ceremonies. Officially, both VANOC and Cirque cite the latter's commitments to private projects as the reason no deal was signed."

I think it's a shame that the Cirque du Soleil is no longer going to be involved in the 2010 ceremonies, but I also don't think they should be if they feel the need to be in control of the entire thing. The point of the olympics are to emphasize collaboration, and Cirque de Soleil would not be showing a very good example of that if they refused to work with VANOC in the opening ceremonies.

I think it says a lot about Cirque if they don't want to collaborate with the VANOC on opening and closing ceremonies. Cirque is all about creating a worldly experience, but I wonder if they have outgrown their ties to Canada's national identity and are trying to not be tied down with any one particular country. Of course if they Olympic games were going to be in Montreal this would be a different story.

Yeah, but to Cirque, the olympics might be cool, but not that big of a deal, you have to remember how many shows Cirque puts together, in all kinds of venues in front of tons of people. Getting the olympics might seem like a big deal to some, but its probably more of a hassle than a blessing.

cirque isn't the only credit canada has to its name... it's next step should be one of their hockey teams doing the ceremonies. what's more entertaining than watching people beat each other up with sticks?

It would be quite the ceremony to have Cirque involved in the process of creating the ceremonies for the 2010 games. Something of this scale would be quite a jump for the company and would either firmly plant their foot in the door as a large scale production venture, or break their chances of doing it again. Sometimes it is not always a good idea to have the big name company doing every show they can. It is good to see the work of other creative minds and see how they perceive the ceremonies. It is disappointing to hear they dropped out, but at the same time it is chancy situation for them.

Quick comment to DMXwidget, Cirque really is a large scale production venture.

I think it was a good move for cirque. You hire cirque to do it or not. Whats important is that it's them protecting their artistic vision, not just going "eh, not interested." I don't blame them though I am sadden cause like bward all think about when someone say's "Canada" is hockey and cirque. Oh and moose.
