"The Molecules Changed in the Room": Creating a Play from Real Asian Women’s Desires, Dreams, and Heartaches
HowlRound Theatre Commons: A mutual friend brought Danielle Iwata to the Ascend! show at The Tank, an interview-based show written and co-directed by Amy Zhang with an all Asian woman cast and crew, that was created in response to the pandemic and the anti-Asian attacks. The friend connected the two of them after Danielle remarked that it was the most “nuanced depiction of Asian women on stage” she’d ever seen.

One of the most important things about being an Asian women in theatre definitely feels like it's about how we should all be so lucky just to be a part of it. It's not fair that white people can intrinsically feel like they're so well incorporated into it that everyone else should feel excluded. All of the different emotional baggage the author felt about taking a different career or just being so grateful in the first place feels like that's a universal feeling amongst all Asian women. But when we deconstruct that and make space for ourselves by ourselves, the art and the process are transformative and make for great story telling. It'll never be fair that this is a white person's world, but I think once we start taking ownership of the stories we hold and have, we can make a place for ourselves in this industry and share it with others.
