SAG-AFTRA Health Plan Changes Spark Outrage From Senior Performers

Variety: Amid the avalanche of disheartening developments this year, few were as dispiriting in Hollywood as the Aug. 12 announcement by the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan that it was eliminating coverage for 11,750 of 32,000 participants, including 8,200 senior performers.

Any time there is a discussion that involves health care being tied to the job you do it makes reminds me that this country is messed up. If we had a nationalized health care system then this entire topic would be moot.

As it is the discussion of removing health care for senior employees is disgusting. The institution should have planned for the program to be solvent before the extra burden of COVID. While I understand that the current epidemic is straining every system in place and perhaps it is for the best.I hope this can be the catalyst that can point out the craziness of the American system. One that relied on good luck and “it’s too big to change” as it’s modle.

Well, here we go again with SAG-AFTRA in the news. I’m pretty sure that if I were in the union and this was going on, that I would be fighting for a recall election for the top leadership. Before you go and cut member’s healthcare, especially after you changed the eligibility rules, maybe you should start by cutting your own pay and benefits as well as the pay and benefits of the other top earners leading the organization. You’re not showing that you care about the members, only that you are greedy and arrogant. What’s worse is that this is targeting older actors specifically. It’s almost like saying, we don’t want any of you around so would you just die already. I have no love for the leadership of SAG-AFTRA. I think all of them need to resign and get in some leadership that cares about all of the members and finding better ways to save money that don’t affect things like healthcare for it’s members. Shame on you SAG.

Like Josh pointed out it does seem like every single week there is at least one article about SAG-AFTRA. It makes sense that the union is going through changes as they are trying to protect the union during the pandemic however it seems like every time there is an article they are doing the opposite of protecting. Striping people of their healthcare especially during these troubling times is (excuse my french) fucked up. They do not care about their members and are willing to do anything to make themselves look good while exploiting everyone else. Something that worries me is if the union does not care about actors how is the rest of the industry supposed to and what is supposed to protect them from getting exploited and mistreated. They way that the guild is trying to make this seem like a positive move is also really frustrating to me as it is anything but. This is a clear reason why I think health care should not be tied to your job and frankly businesses should not have the pressure of providing healthcare and workers should not be worried about moving from job to job at the risk of losing healthcare. While that is a change that will take a couple of years to happen, currently SAG needs to change the way they are operating to a team that actually cares about their members not just money.
