Theatre Unions Rebuke SCOTUS Union Fee Decision

AMERICAN THEATRE: On Wednesday, June 27, the Supreme Court issued a ruling on the case of Janus v. AFSCME. The majority opinion stated that public employees do not have to pay mandatory agency fees to unions, even if they benefit from the actions of those unions. Those fees usually cover the costs of collective bargaining, and are separate from the dues paid by members.

I saw that IATSE posted that the rate of workplace fatalities is 54% higher in right-to-work states and I was very curious about what the decision was about that it could have such serious consequences. This case was about the first amendment freedom of speech of a man who felt that it was against his rights to have to pay the union for bargaining even though he did not agree with them. I agree with the representatives from AEA and SDC that this undermines people's right to unionize and divides workers into union and nonunion before unions were required to bargain for all workers. I could see how not all workers being taken care of could result in a higher fatality rate.
