‘Wicked’ Beats ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ at the Broadway Box Office
Variety: “Wicked,” the musical that hit $1 billion faster than any other Broadway title, has now passed “The Phantom of the Opera” at the Broadway box office. The longrunning “Wizard of Oz” backstory now weighs in at $1.12 billion in New York sales alone, ahead of the $1.11 billion currently on the books for “Phantom.”

It is such good news that Wicked is doing so well on Broadway. I luckily got really good seats when I watched Wicked for the first time. It was an absolutely stunning show, from the cast, the music, the costumes, the makeup, the set, to everything else. One of my most memorable moments was being able to sit in the orchestra section while the Elphaba performed "Defying Gravity." It was a magical moment when she rose up into the air and declared her freedom from the corrupted world. Her robe extended all the way to the floor, flaring outwards. She looked powerful, beautiful, and stunning, in the sense of her solitary determination. Rachel Tucker, who was Elphaba in the West End production, reprised her role in the production I saw. She was full of energy and power throughout her performance and brought tears into the audience's eyes at the end of the show. Her interpretation of Elphaba's transformation was, in my opinion, right on point and had her own flavor instead of just copying what Idina Menzel did. It was a great experience and I hope I can see it again some time in the future.
