The Rise of the Prop Designer
Prop Agenda: The title of “prop designer” seems to appear more now than in the past. More experienced prop masters have made note that younger props people are being credited as prop designer on their shows, or self-identifying as one on their resumes. Is this just a trick of perception, or are prop designers actually growing in number?

I found this article very interesting because, though the title suggests a rising amount of acknowledgment of prop designers, it discusses the rise of just the title of prop designer. I think props are crucial to the production of a show and, in my opinion, there should be a separate person in charge of, not only getting the props, but deciding how they look and how they fit into the overall message of the show. The article mentions that, for the most part, scenic designers are in charge of designing the props and, in some ways, this makes sense because props usually need to connect to the scenery, but, on the other hand, I think figuring out props is a significant amount of work that should be delegated to someone else. I agree with the author’s point that, though the term is becoming more common, the theater community should begin to figure out what the job of a prop designer entails and how it can be expanded, so that the work of a props designer can be credited as it should be.
