L.A. Sentimental Expressing the Mood of City Hall with Color

Rosco Spectrum: Founded in 1977, Angstrom Lighting is one of the only Los Angeles lighting companies that’s an approved vendor of L.A. County. Because of that, Angstrom has been responsible for illuminating L.A. City Hall for the past three decades – including changing the color-scheme of the building to celebrate an event, pay homage to a group or individual, bring awareness to a cause or simply convey the mood of the city to its residents.

It is so incredible to see lighting as a major tool in a social movement. It is a great reminder that lighting designers and technicians have the power to bring people together and aid people in the recall of important memories and events in the world. Lighting can also be a catalyst for a movement of solidarity for a group, as shown specifically after the Orlando Shooting in Pulse. I love that technology has given us the ability to change the colors in a relatively simple process, so, in times like these, public spaces become symbols of hope and remembrance. Government buildings and city centers can stand in solidarity with other citizens of the world, as a symbol of support and strength. It also draws a direct parallel to theater, in that we have the ability to evoke certain responses from audience members through lighting design, and, therefore, enhance the performance.
