Canadian High School Tries Too Hard To Get Rights To “Hamilton”

Arts Integrity Initiative: On the one hand, it’s hard not to admire the efforts of Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough, Canada, near Toronto. A teacher and her students made as thorough a pitch as possible to be the first high school to produce the musical Hamilton, seemingly having staged several elaborate numbers from the show in their effort to be recognized.

As someone who lives merely one subway stop from a theater where Hamilton is performed every week, and has listened through the entire soundtrack thousands of times, I can understand the crushing desire to perform this Musical. However, as innocent and hopeful as this school's plea is made out to be, it is illegal. And if we are to maintain the system that has held together copyrights to theatrical productions for so long we must not bend the rules. That's why I believe it to be of the utmost importance that no trace of this school's production is allowed to exist online, and that all bootlegged versions of Hamilton should ideally be removed. While I recognize this as an impossibility, I believe any measures that could be taken should be taken.
