CrystalGel – A Costumer’s New Best Friend
Rosco Spectrum: Costumers often choose a fabric for a number of reasons, including its feel, color, translucency and weight. Oftentimes, however, that fabric needs to be modified to fit the needs of the production. For a 2015 production of Peter and the Starcatcher at Playmakers Repertory Company, the costume crew needed to create a dress for the character Teacher so that he appeared as an illuminated mermaid. This is so cool! It really pays to have knowledge outside of your area of expertise. I'm not sure what the intended use of the Crystal Gel is, but being aware of the company and its products as well as a willingness is important. It was really interesting to see a real life progression from the design to how the technicians work through the needs and demands for the costume. It is amazing how the Rosco Crystal Gel was the perfect fix for the problems at hand. I am so excited to link what I have learned about fabric in my Costumes mini to this article. You never truly really realize the presence of knew knowledge until it becomes relevant and that's that's a beautiful thing. This is such a neat trick and I will certainly keep it in mind when I am designing and/or building garments in future.
