I could not agree more with this video. It is so important to get organized and more importantly stay organized. Growing up I saw many contractors and other trade workers working in an environment that was very messy. You could also ask any of them and they would all say that their method is best because they know where everything is. But the truth is that if you are more organized you will be more comfortable on the job site. Although I’m not a contractor I do sometimes find myself beginning to work in an environment that makes me stressed. I feel that the best way to fix this is to take time out of the day and tighty up. Being clean is so important; it not only makes you look better, it also helps you become more efficient. Having a clear plan can change the outcome of a project and maybe this time around you only had to fix 1 problem instead of 10; take the time and do the project right.
I realize that I am not the most organized person on the planet. I'm probably one of the least organized people in 33. My desk is covered in craft supplies, random objects, and an ungodly amount of fabric. I know that I have to get, and stay organized. Just the other day I lost five minutes looking for a sewing needle. I lost another three minutes to a missing multi-tool. It's stressful and wasteful and needs to be changed. That being said, this video was extremely useful. I need to just take a day to reorganize my desk, shelf, and life. I do have a system designed already. There are labels and specialized compartments that fit and sort everything. I just need to actually follow my own system instead of just putting it back on my desk. I can't even imagine how much time I would save if only I could do that. No more missing tools. No more half-panicking trying to find something before crew. No more wasting time just looking for something. My lack of organization is a problem that has to be solved.
Having an organized workspace, whether portable or not, is so important. Being able to quickly find materials and tools, and having the space to move around and not be constantly bumping into things, is essential to maintaining productivity. Having worked as a mobile DJ, I can totally relate to having to organize moving vehicles. Many people working in live sound or as mobile DJs tend to use vans or trailers for transport (and sometimes storage), and there are several challenges present with this: fitting a lot of gear, securing heavy gear, and keeping all the odds and ends organized. I have worked with DJs who maintain great organization and with others who at the end of the night throw every single cable in a huge bag just to speed u strike (but it means they’ll have to sort and re-coil later… blegh). Organization from the large scale (the space) to the small (smaller tools boxes and cases) both keeps you organized and your equipment clean and in good condition. This dude has a sick trailer by the way!
