From Broadway to Nairobi: 'Amazing Grace' musical has first student production, in Africa
Life Upon the Sacred Stage: Thanks to Christopher Smith, “Amazing Grace,” John Newton’s 18th century hymn of redemption, is now part of the canon of Broadway show tunes. Smith is the creator of the musical by the same name that ran on the Great White Way last year and is being prepared for a North American tour. With cast and crew members he gathered Monday in the downstairs party room of a bar in midtown Manhattan to celebrate the release of the original cast recording.

When I first heard about the production of Amazing Grace in Nairobi I was very excited and interested in how it would be different than the Broadway production. The point of view on this show is very different from an English perspective versus an African perspective. I am very curious if they are going to change the story in anyway. I think it is great that Laiona Michelle went to Nairobi to work with the kids. She is an amazing person and I know will make a huge impact on them because she is very connected to this story and her character Nanna. There are two other people with Laiona that are documenting their time with the school working on the production. This show is very special even though it did not last very long on Broadway it was an incredible experience working on it. The company was like a huge family that shared a very special bond together. It was so special when the audience stood and sang with the cast during the final number. That is not something that happens during many shows.
