O'Reilly Theater's 'Guys and Dolls' delivers wit, warmth, impressive singing

TribLIVE: “Guys and Dolls,” now playing at the O'Reilly Theater, Downtown, turns 65 this year.

But this Pittsburgh Public Theater production is in no need of Medicare, Social Security or retirement planning.

Unlike many musical theater classics, Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows' book is as fresh, funny and lively as it was when it debuted on Broadway in 1950.

In a perfect world I would be able to see this production.
I read an article on the blog earlier this month about this same production. I was weary that this now 65 year old musical (WOW) would be dated and not fun for everyone now. I am happy to hear that I am wrong. I love all that this review has to say in regards to the actors. These characters are classics in the American musical theatre arsenal and I am glad to hear that they are being portrayed with 'ummph. I am also glad to hear about all of the small nuances in the technical aspects of the show. I love that the scenic designer found ways create indoor and outdoor spaces flow seamlessly and found space for the dance moments. I love when danceable spaces are tight, it pushes the choreographer in that same direction.
What I am most excited about by this article is that the theatre scene in Pittsburgh is thriving. I am glad to go to school in a city where so much live theatre, and the arts in general are being supported. I look forward to going out and seeing productions in the future, hopefully starting with G&D.
