Interview: Bones Composer Julia Newmann
The Mary Sue: Since its premiere in 2005, popular television series Bones has delivered one of the most consistently smart and complex female protagonists on primetime, Dr. Temperence “Bones” Brennan. Created by Hart Hanson and loosely based on the writings of real-life forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs, the show is now in its 11th season and is the longest-running one-hour drama series produced by FOX.

Though I regularly watch Bones, I have not thought much about the music in the show. Or in any TV show for that matter. People often talk about music or soundtracks from movies, but I rarely hear people talking about music from TV shows. That being said, if it weren’t there, I’d probably miss it. It is great to know that the show in addition to having a strong female protagonist also has a strong female composer. This article also taught me a lot about how music in TV shows is made. Technology has made much of the music that we hear in TV possible. With only a few days to create a score, digital music technology has made it possible to get complex music in TV shows. In addition, it allows people to work from different places at different times to get the same result.
