Everything is a Remix: the remastered fifth anniversary edition

Boing Boing: Kirby Ferguson writes, "Everything is a Remix has been polished, merged and rereleased for its fifth anniversary."

Everything is a Remix is Ferguson's amazing, must-watch series of videos analyzing the way that incorporating direct lifts from songs, movies and other art forms is critical to creative production.

It seems as though it is becoming harder to know where to draw the line between "borrowing" or using something for inspiration and appropriating or copying. It is easier than ever to produce artistic work, so there is naturally more material one must navigate around to truly create something original. Whenever I must design or create something, I immediately turn to research first. My process necessitates the use of preexisting work.

Because art is such a qualitative thing, it is impossible to define the line between acceptably using someone else's work for inspiration or "borrowing" and copying. There is no way to identify a percentage of "original" content in something. Just this past week in Fundamentals of Directing, two groups created strikingly similar pieces, despite being contained in two different rooms throughout the entire creative process. Anyone observing the two pieces without knowing the circumstances of their creation would likely have assumed an exchange of ideas occurred between the groups. Instances like this further obfuscate the already immense task of differentiating between borrowing and copying.
