Carnegie Mellon's Center for the Arts in Society Launches Performance Initiative

Carnegie Mellon News - Carnegie Mellon University: Carnegie Mellon University's Center for the Arts in Society (CAS), a research center in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and College of Fine Arts that investigates the role of arts in societies, is launching a new initiative to explore performance. CAS plans to approach the concept of performance as an expansive form, from the traditional relationship between an audience and an actor to the constructions of political protest or how we frame our lives through social rituals, athletics, digital devices and everyday acts.

The performance initiative sounds very interesting and it makes sense that CAS would be the birthplace of such a project. I was surprised to read how far they are planning to extrapolate the meaning of performance. I am curious how these less direct platforms for performance will manifest in the work that comes out of the initiative. I generally do not think of athletics, social media, etc as performance so I'm excited to see how it is framed as such by the initiative. I'm happy to see Wendy and Larry as participants and hope to see future information about how the initiative fares.
