Stage Directions: The American Theatre Wing partnered with the Village Voice to co-present the Obie Awards, Off-Broadway’s highest honor. The Wing will run the awards under a new Obies Administration Committee, which will be chaired by Michael Feingold, longtime critic for the Village Voice who was Obie Chairman from 2006-2013. He was let go from the Voice shortly before the 2013 Obie Awards, but returned to chair the 2014 awards. The Voice has licensed the Obie trademark to the American Theatre Wing for an initial period of 10 years. The next Obie Awards ceremony and the first under this partnership will take place in May 2015, and will mark the Obie’s 60th anniversary.

Good for the American Theatre Wing, taking over the Obie awards will finally give them the publicity that they need all those Off-Broadway performers, directors and designers deserve to be put in a spotlight like the actors on Broadway do. As for the Off-Broadway sound designers, I'm sorry, who knows if they'll continue recognizing you. After all they don't quite understand what it is you do and therefore you don't deserve the same treatment as the other designers do. Seeing that they are the American Theatre Wing you'd think that they'd be able to get somebody who understands the magical mystery that comes out of the black boxes in the sky and can judge whether or not it sounds good. I guess that is asking too much from an organization that claims to, "recognize and nurture excellence in the theatre on Broadway, Off Broadway, Off Off Broadway, and in the regions."
