I wonder how many of the companies who have recently been operating unpaid internship programs have seen this. My question is, "Have these companies not seen this, or have they seen it and decided to ignore it?" I find this explanation of what constitutes an intern-employee versus an unpaid intern to be very clear. I would love to see what the laws that underlie this fact sheet say. The fact sheet seems straight-forward enough to me that I doubt the laws leave much room for interpretation. I don't understand how so many companies, especially so many high-profile, large-scale companies have been getting away with having unpaid interns for so long. We all have to start somewhere, and we need to be able to support ourselves financially along the way. Do the CEOs of these companies not understand that their interns are doing valuable work that they deserve to be compensated for? Were they never an intern or a young professional with financial needs? I truly don't understand how this has been such a widespread occurrence, and I'm so glad that actions are being taken to stop these unfair labor practices.
