The "Spirit" of Engraving

This is pretty cool and the designs that they have been integrating are so intricate and detailed. Someone showed me the image of the Johnnie Walker display recently and I thought that it looked great, but I didn't think twice about the production process, maybe because I know very little about laser engraving. Now I have a greater appreciation for this company.

Having a company there for you to do this is great, trying to do it on your own is a whole other situation. The creativity behind engraving and deciding what materials to use takes some knowledge. Once you begin to have an understanding it becomes much easier and new ideas will pop into your head immediately. I wish that one of our classes covered how to use the laser cutter instead of just learning by doing. The possibilities that we have with our laser cutter are vast and it is under used for all of its capabilities. Having a skill to engrave on other materials could improve peoples designs simply by expanding their knowledge on a tool they already use.

I have always found laser cutters very very cool and like the idea of using it for displays. The one thing that I think is especially cool here is that they are lasering multiple materials and combining them into one display. I have yet to play with a laser power enough to engrave and cut steel, but I think combining steel with acrylic and glass would allow to make really neat displays such as those Johnnie Walker has had made here

It is interesting to see the problem solving process that went into this project. It is cool to see how SBC Laser considered different materials for each project and then narrowed down their options based on how they interacted with the laser, etc. This article helps me better understand the different capabilities of laser engravers and will help me in the future as I'm trying to decide how to best approach a laser cutting situation.
