MindBending AV: iPad-controlled Experimental Displays

Corporate Tech Decisions: Just because a display uses cutting-edge technology to present content, it doesn’t mean that it takes rocket science to control the installation. With the wide array open-source control software on the market today, creating a video display installation using processors like OpenFrameworks, max MSP or other video/jitter control programs that are controlled and integrated into iPad interfaces, has opened up a new realm of experimental displays.

These projects look very interesting. I would love to learn more about them. I don't think I fully understand why the iPad is so important to the projects. I can understand why an easy to understand and use interface is important for a project like this that is running on software with complex control systems. I don't see why an iPad is the best tool for this. The UI that I was in the images didn't look like it really took advantage of the iPads touch screen. I think that a larger non portable touch screen would be better if a touch screen is really needed. I can't really say for sure if the iPad wasn't important for these projects, but from what I see it wasn't. I would really like to hear more about what the iPad's role was.

The use of the iPad as a user interface seems as if it is becoming more prominent as it develops. Though I do not have much experience with it as a video guy, I can say that I have used it for audio applications. At my high school we had a digital sound console (SoundCraft Vi4) that had an iPad app associated with it. When I got my iPad I began to use this app to set monitor levels from the stage and those levels would transfer over the network to the console. I was also able to give my A2 my iPad so he could change levels as the talent needed. While it may seem that it diverts control from me at FOH the console still had overriding power.

I find it pretty interesting that the iPad is starting to be used so much more widely. I don't have particularly extensive experience with them, but it doesn't seem to me that they are all that much easier to use as control devices than are computers. Obviously the main appeal of the iPad is the touch screen, but so far it seems too limited to make much of a difference. However I am reminded a bit of the interface that Tony Stark has in the new Iron Man movies -- I wonder how long it will take for that kind of technology to be created and used, if ever.

I think that iPads are awesome tools for artists in a numerous amount of ways. They can easily hold information and send information on the go. This makes for awesome communication. In this context, I think it is really cool how they are using the technology to create something so interesting. This idea could possibly be taken to the next level by using the touch-screen to make the art interactive. Just a thought. My only concern is what happens if one of the iPads crashes?
