Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon: Excerpt From ‘The Everything Store’

Businessweek: Within Amazon.com (AMZN) there’s a certain type of e-mail that elicits waves of panic. It usually originates with an annoyed customer who complains to the company’s founder and chief executive officer. Jeff Bezos has a public e-mail address, jeff@amazon.com. Not only does he read many customer complaints, he forwards them to the relevant Amazon employees, with a one-character addition: a question mark.

Learning about some of the inner workings at Amazon was pretty fascinating, especially since I had only every really thought of it as a massive, faceless conglomeration of sorts. I found it interesting to see what Jeff Bezos' personality was like. It seems his disaffecting manner would be pretty difficult to work with, but it does make a lot of sense that it contributes to how successful he is at compartmentalizing and thinking completely objectively. All of that helps the company, it would seem, even though it's completely against the more typical ideal of a "good" boss. It was interesting that there was such a focus on Bezos' personal life, and the life of a father that he never really knew. It's cool to know, of course, but all in all a little bit irrelevant in regards to the company that is Amazon -- although I do kind of want to know what happened in the end with Bezos' biological father.
